Teamwork, Service & Soft Skills

This page provides an overview of when I have utilised teamwork and other soft skills. This includes my academic life, professional employment, casual employment, and community participation.

Academic Life Teamwork
Skills

Throughout the course of my studies, I have participated in numerous subjects. Each had its own assessment task that needed to be completed. Most of these assessment tasks were required to be completed in groups of between three to six students, depending on the subject. Meaning that developing strong teamwork skills were essential to succeeding academically.

A common example of when we would utilise these collaboration skills is to divide the assessment task into sections that can be completed independently from each other and then divide these sections amongst ourselves to complete and then compile together later.

In addition to requiring teamwork skills, I have also enhanced my other soft skills, including communication, time management, public speaking/presentation, teaching, and leadership skills.

I have volunteered for the group leader position ten times throughout my studies, requiring me to develop and utilise my leadership skills to organise and coordinate the group's efforts towards solving the problem ahead while also ensuring the quality of each member's work was up to the quality of standard agreed to by the group.

One example of where I had to demonstrate leadership was when another group member's work was not up to standard. I would take the time to tutor the member one-on-one on improving the quality of their component. I found this often led to these group members learning and then going above and beyond to deliver a quality component for the submission.

Professional Employment Teamwork Skills

During my time at Cyrius Media Group and Nanosonics, I often worked within a team of some sort, whether it was for a large company project or to resolve issues that may arise in the day-to-day. Soft skills such as collaboration, time management, leadership, and the ability to work effectively in a team were essential for me to complete the projects and tasks that were assigned to me.

Often, if I were working on a large project, we would divide the work into components that best suited each member of the team's skill set. One such example would be back when I worked at Cyrius Media Group. The team was tasked to build an e-commerce site from scratch. Components that required complex back-end coding were left to the senior developers. In contrast, not-so-complex components were distributed evenly amongst junior developers who would complete their individual components before moving on to assisting other junior developers who had come across "roadblocks" in their components.

Casual Employment Teamwork Skills

While employed at "JB-Hi-Fi" and "Target", I commonly utilised teamwork and other valuable soft skills such as time management, task prioritisation, time management, customer service, and leadership skills. A scenario in which I would rely upon team working skills is if a customer had a query that I could not resolve myself, I would communicate with the rest of the team to find a solution to the query that could be resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Another example of when we would rely on teamwork skills is when employees cannot complete their work on time. As a team, we would often divide the remaining workload between ourselves to assist the employee in completing their task on time.

Community Participation Teamwork Skills

Teamwork is an essential skill that is required when participating in any team sport, such as soccer. I have played soccer since 2010 and joined the West Ryde Rovers in 2018. Throughout all my years of playing soccer, I have continued to rely upon skills such as teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills. Particularly as a defender (the position that I play in), it is critical for players in the defensive line to work together as a team to cover a defender if they must move up to intercept an attacking player.

In 2014, I decided to become a referee for soccer as I wanted to challenge myself and develop my confidence, leadership, and ability to be assertive in challenging situations. Over the five years that I was a football referee, I developed and improved these skills greatly. I also utilised other skills, including teamwork and communication skills, as I often had to work with a team of two other referees who would assist me throughout various games as linesmen. When applicable, I would also take the opportunity to coach younger and unfamiliar players during games when it was required.
